Carnival Theme Ceramics

August 25th, 2008

Tilt-a-world ceramic dish. When I was a child, every year my moms job held a family day at Liberty Land, located in Memphis TN . And apart from being terrified from the roller coasters, which are now my favorite by the way. I loved the UFO ride. Of course now I can’t remember what it was called, but tilt-a-world comes to mind. You walk inside this huge UFO with flashing lights with loud rap music playing. Yeah, for some reason Liberty Land back in the 80’s, played rap music on all the rides. Then everyone stands against the red padded walls and once started the gravity would hold you there as this terrific ride would spin and tilt. It was so much fun, so I reinvented the fun with the animals of the forest.tawab2.jpgNext we have the bunny on a stage, he’s ready to guess your age for one ticket. I meant for him to be a bell, and before I remembered, I had already bisque fired him and forgot to add the bell inside. He was made with a 1960’s bunny and he stands on top of a vintage dessert dish, which has this great geometrical shape. I then added hand molded pom pom balls around the edges to give it the real carnival feel.cbuntb.jpgAnd last we have the scalloped hem vase. I just love scalloped hems on clothes and on curtains and on the carnival tents. This vintage design vase just seems to say carnival to me so I played it up with a bright candy colored blue.cvtb2.jpgAll these and more are available for sale over in my Etsy shop!

Sad Wide Eyed Ceramic Hippos

August 25th, 2008

If you flashback to the seventies and look at what was hot, you may find a sad eyed hippo sitting on a shelf in someones favorite living space.

I’ve had this mold for quite sometime and was never happy with the way I was painting them. And then one day, this wonderful  sad eyed collector, emailed me with a photo of a grey hippo and asked if I could do one as a custom order.  So I took on the project and it was a challenge but so much fun! So here is results of the hippo I made for her. I think he come out so cute! So now I am addicted and am creating more of these guys every week.

So after I made her order, I immediately started on making more sad eyed hippos, in bright colors with those sad puppy dog eyes. I painted this one in chartreuse green with pink eyes.  I think this is my favorite piece yet! This one has sold already, but I am taking pre-orders to do more in this color. Next up is one in orange with green eyes and one in yellow with orange eyes. I just painted the last coats of glaze this morning and they should be ready to list in the shop in the morning.
